Facts about Los Angeles

Los Angeles is known for having heavy traffic and being home to a number of celebrities. There are lots of other features to this fascinating city as well. It’s the third-largest oil field in the United States, and there’s an oil derrick on the campus of Beverly Hills High School that produces about 400 barrels of oil every day. The fabulous and exclusive town of Beverly Hills started as a lima bean ranch but is now one of the richest places in the world. In fact, if Los Angeles were its own country, the economy would be larger than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland’s or Sweden.

Climate

The Los Angeles climate is about as agreeable as it can get. The summers are hot and dry with highs in the mid-80’s, and winter stays quite balmy in the high 60’s - though you’ll see the locals break out their jackets any time it gets below 70. Spring and fall don’t really exist, and you won’t see much rain here.

Culture

Home to the Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame, and many of pop culture’s biggest stars, LA is full of music, theater, and art. The Fonda Theater and the Troubador nightclub still harken back to LA’s grittier days, hosting some of Hollywood’s most notable characters. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (or LACMA) is the largest of its kind in the West, but you’re likely to be just as thrilled by the countless small galleries and exhibitions throughout the city. Art is always evolving, and this city is riding that wave.

Transportation

Transportation in LA is a nightmare. Known for its traffic bottlenecks and epic commute times, everybody drives it seems - except the dedicated few who use the extensive public transit system. This is in part due to LA’s sprawling suburbs, which stretch for miles around the city’s official limits - but driving in LA also just seems to be part of the culture. California is the sixth most expensive state in the country, and LA is one of its most expensive cities. Expect to pay 30% above national average to rent, and 175% above to buy a home.

LA is a massive city, and as such, it contains a wide range of neighborhoods. Each one has a different personality, pace of life, and resident population, so choose a neighborhood that you like and that suits your needs. This will keep you out of the traffic jams as much as possible by staying local.
