The city gets its name from the Mayaimi tribe that was native to the area in the 1600s and 1700s. Businesswoman Julia Tuttle encouraged a railroad mogul to settle in the area in 1896, and this is when the city of Miami was officially established. Miami is the only major city with a woman as its founder. Miami is also the only city that is surrounded by two national parks: Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park.
