Facts about Charlotte

Charlotte, also known as the Queen City, is named for Charlotte, Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She was Queen Consort of the UK, right before Charlotte was founded. Even though Charlotte can get pretty cold in the winter, there are only three times in the city’s history when snow fell on Christmas Day. The last time was in 2010. The largest Jewish community in North Carolina is in Charlotte, and the city is home to the biggest Jewish community center in the area, Shalom Park. Even though Charlotte is a large metropolitan area, there is no zoo in the city, but the Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro is close by. Charlotte is also home to the state’s oldest rugby club.

Despite the assumptions that North Carolina is just always hot, Charlotte experiences all seasons. November through March brings the thermometer down below 40F for some cold, wet weather, and January-February might even see some freezing temperatures. Summers are indeed hot with highs in the 90s and humidity levels in the 80-90% range. The best time to move is probably May-June or September-October.

Culture

Is it any surprise that some of the biggest attractions in Charlotte are NASCAR and professional sports? Check out the NASCAR Hall of Fame for high-tech exhibits and racing simulators, keep the adrenaline high with an afternoon at the U.S. National Whitewater Center - the world’s largest man-made whitewater river. For a taste of North Carolina’s homegrown produce head to the 7th Street Public Market, and then take a stroll in Freedom Park - “the Central Park of Charlotte.” Of course, seeing the Hornets, Panthers, and Checkers play has to be somewhere on your itinerary.  

Transportation

Can you live in Charlotte without a car? You can, but it has its downsides. The most walkable area - living in Uptown - is one of the more expensive places to live, and you end up with limited options for grocery shopping without a significant expedition on public transit. Even still, it does exist. The Charlotte Area Transportation System (CATS) offers a monthly pass for $88 for both local buses, express buses, and the light rail.

The cost of living in Charlotte is nearly on par with the national average. Buying a home costs 4% less, in fact, around $178,000 average. Rent is a tiny bit higher at an average of $966. 

Where to Live

The neighborhoods in Charlotte are quite diverse due to the city’s history of expansion. Eastover, just southeast of Center City, is one of the poshest of the bunch - home to the city’s icons, the historic and large homes run for upwards of $800,000. Commonwealth, just east of Center City, has fun establishments like The Peculiar Rabbit and is home to a diverse range of ages and ethnicities. Barclay Downs was once a farm and has been developed into a somewhat self-sufficient work-live community.
