Moving to Austin doesn't have to be a stressful experience. Before starting your search, make sure you've gone through the following:
Must-haves, and what you'll be willing to compromise on. You may need to give up certain amenities to live in your favorite neighborhood, or otherwise look for a smaller layout or a different apartment type.
Your search horizon. The ideal time to start searching is between 1-2 months before your planned move-in date. However, don't be stressed if you only have a couple weeks to go; a surpising amount of rental inventory is usually available for immediate move-in.
Your favorite neighborhoods. We've put together a curated list below of some of the more popular areas to get you started on where to live - whether you're moving by yourself or with a family, looking for a residential area or one in the middle of the action.
Documents you'll need when applying for an apartment. These will vary depending on the landlord, but most require verification of employment and income, your credit report, and references from previous landlords.
Whether you'd like to live alone or with roommates. Roommates can mean considerable cost savings upwards of 50%-60% depending on the amount of people
Austin is the state capital of Texas - a city bordering the hill county region. Austin had a huge population increase during the Great Depression. The population increased by 66 percent and the University of Texas enrollment nearly doubled during this time period. Austin is home to one of the unique cathedrals of all times “The Cathedral of Junk”. It is actually filled with all sorts of clocks, beer signs, gadgets, and other eccentric items that you need to see to believe. Austin's land mass is almost as enormous as New York City, comprised of about 280 square miles. While in Austin you may run into bats as Austin is home to 750,000 bats in the Springtime and 1.5 million, at the peak of bat watching season. This is usually around summertime. Bat watching is a typical hobby in Austin.
Climate
Ah, the Lone Star State: where the winters are cool but not so cold that you’ll need snow boots. From December through February the lows will drop to the 40s, but the highs during the day stay a fair 65. The summers are hot and humid, with highs in the 80s and 90s April through October. If at all possible, avoid moving during those months. Unless you’re ok with sweating a lot.
Arts and Culture
Known for hipster culture (#KeepAustinWeird anyone?), tacos and food trucks on every street corner, and an incredible array of arts and music, Austin is a colorful city that is meant to be fully experienced. Write South By Southwest (SXSW) on your calendar now, since you won’t want to miss this citywide music, film, and tech festival in mid-March. Take a private Hearse Tour of the city’s many haunted locations with Haunted ATX, or get a more proper history lesson at the Bullock Museum. Zilker Park is an Austin institution and is also home to Austin City Limits, the city’s October music festival, as well as the summer Blues on the Green concert series. You can access Lady Bird Lake from the park as well, but for a true cool-down in the summer Barton Springs is a local favorite.
Transportation
Unless you want to live in Downtown or are focusing your energies in the University district, you’ll probably need a car to get around. Austin’s rail and bus system just doesn’t quite cover this sprawling city’s many neighborhoods. If you want to live in Austin without a car, there are some areas with service -- just choose wisely. A day pass for the MetroBus is just $2.50, $7 for the MetroRail to take you to the outskirts of town.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Austin is slightly above the national average, and that is mostly due to housing costs. Buying a home costs 40% higher than the national average at nearly $258,000, while rent prices are 17% above average at $1,106 per month. Most everything else, including grocery prices, is below the national average… except for haircuts. Blame that on hipster culture?
